1. Take Advantage of Class Bonus
The class bonus in game gives the advantage side additional damage, as well as lowering the disadvantage side with less damage. The class bonus chain is as followed:
Skill > Tech > Mutant > Science > Mystic > Cosmic > Skill
As you are building out your team, make sure that you bring a team with class advantage when the stages get harder. You can check out the list of stages as well as enemies from our Marvel: Contest of Champions stage list.
2. How to Get More Heroes
The game offers you a few ways to get more heroes onto your team roster: Below is a quick run down of them:
1. Premium Hero Crystal
You basically spend 100 units for each shot at opening a hero crystal. You have chances to get 2~4 star heroes with this method. This is the best way for you to receive the premium heroes in the game. You can get free units when you first complete the stage, and when you get 100% explore completion reward on any stage.
2. Daily Crystal
You have chances to receive 1~3 star heroes with the daily claim. However, the chance at landing a three star is pretty low. However, we have personally gotten a 3 star black panther from the daily crystal draw.
3. Arena Crystal
When you win at Arena fights, you will win arena chips which can be used to purchase the “real” arena crystal. You have a really small chance at getting a 4 star punisher with this method.
4. Arena Event Ranking Reward
From time to time, the game offers special events that reward the top players with strong heroes. Different events have different hero roster requirements. So make sure you boost up your heroes to be eligible for those special rewards.
3. Focus Upgrade Higher Star Ranked Heroes
It can be tempting to start upgrading your heroes when you first start the game. Do not do it! Wait until you have a roster of 3 star heroes and upgrade those. If you are stuck and really have to upgrade lower star heroes, start with 2 stars. Never ever spend your precious ISO-8 on the 1 star heroes, unless you have maxed out all the others first.
Focus to upgrade your higher star heroes as they have higher potentials. The higher rarity heroes typically have stronger skills, better stats, more synergy options. All in all, save your ISO-8’s. For detailed guides on leveling up and ranking up your hero, as well as finding information on catalyst requirements, please check out Level up and Rank guide for Marvel: Contest of Champions.
4. Never Sell Your Heroes
Never ever sell your lower ranked heroes even if you have a higher rarity version of it. The reason being is that they are counted separated when it comes to arena fights. You can rotate through all of them daily to get max amount of Arena crystal.
In addition, certain arena events require you to have lower ranked heroes for 3vs3 fights. Again, never ever sell your heroes!
5. Fight Arena Battles All the Time
Whenever you can, go through your entire roster to get all the possible versus crystals. Do not worry about losing your winning streak or just simply losing. As long as you have a shot at winning, it is worthwhile for you to fight.
If you find yourself losing too much with the lower tiered heroes, consider leveling them up a little to boost your chance. However, you should still focus on your higher rarity heroes to push through the quests first.
6. Focus on Story Quests First
Your energy is limited. So unless you really need to get the catalyst from event quests, focus on the story quest first. More advanced quests typically give you higher XP and more ISO-8, so you always want to go for the hardest quest chain that you can handle.
You receive free units when you complete a quest chain the first time, as well as you do a 100% exploration completion. This means, always go for the 100% completion as you move along. You want to receive all the free units that you can, to have a shot at higher rating heroes.
7. Taking Advantage of Synergy
Synergy is important for you to pass the harder stages at later acts. Synergy are bonuses when you a set combo of heroes on your team. The bonuses range from higher health, attack, critical damage, and more. Please check our detailed guide for Marvel: Contest of Champions Synergy Guide.
8. Actual Fighting Strategy
Attack First
It’s always better to attack first. By attacking first, you have better shot at lowering enemy HP. If the enemy’s blocking, then you get a few free shots that lower enemy HP. If you do get hit after attacking, then you gain your special meter much faster at the cost of losing HP. Either way, it is better to be on the offensive in the game.
Finish Your Combos
After you get your initial hit, always follow up with the full attacking sequence. It means that you do not switch to “defense” or “block” in the middle. In general, you will almost never lose by finishing those attacks. If the enemy is blocking, you get the full sequence, if they switch in the middle, they are more often than not to lose to your attack.
Time Your Specials
Your specials are the main methods of dishing out damage against the enemy. Make sure you land those specials clean, meaning that find the best timing to unleash the special without being blocked. In general, some of the good timing include after you finish your combo, or in the middle of enemy combo.
Know Your Hero’s Specials
Different heroes have different styles of combo. Some specials are ranged hits, 1 hit close ranged, or a series of hits. If you use the specials incorrectly, you can very likely hit air and just waste those specials. So know what you are using before using them to get the most effect.
The same applies to enemy’s special as well. When they are fully charged, expect them to use the specials on you. This means keeping an eye out. It can be hard to dodge or block those specials, but if you have quick eye and finger, you can potentially pull it off from time to time.
Charge for Hard Attack after Distance
If the enemy AI has a good distance between you and him. Always “Charge” for the heavy attack, wait for them to start dashing towards you. If you time it right, your heavy hit blow them back at the corner. you can kill them without ever losing 1 single HP, in addition, you gain more special meter with charged attack as well.
Use Your Specials Often
When a fight is over, you lose all the special meters, so it means that whenever you can. Use those specials to finish enemies quicker, rather than drag out the batter with normal shots. You would rather use more special to conserve your HP.
9. HP and Potion Conservation Tips
In quest mode, your hero’s HP carries through to the next enemy before you finish the quest chain. You should almost never let your hero dies unless you are sure you do not need it later. It is much cheaper to use potions on your heroes rather than using reviving item.
Change your fighting style from aggressive to defensive when your HP is getting low.
Save your potions for harder quests later, specifically class quests or special event quests to unlock catalyst.
Lastly, if your hero does die during battle, you can fight the enemy again with their HP already weakened by your previous hero.
